Sweden proposed closing the Baltic to tankers from Russia
Sweden is in favor of introducing new measures against Russian oil tankers passing through the waters of the Baltic Sea. This statement was made by Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström in an interview with the Guardian.
According to him, the old Russian fleet violates all sorts of maritime rules, and a hypothetical oil leak or other accidents could lead to an “ecological disaster” in the region. The minister pointed out the need to approve new rules in the Nordic countries to prevent a possible “environmental catastrophe.”
Billström believes that all states would suffer if serious problems were caused by a collision or fuel leak from one of the Russian vessels, many of which were unserviceable or in extremely poor condition. At the same time, the minister noted that the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO changed the strategic situation in the Baltic region and strengthened the important island of Gotland.
Thus, even the Swedish Foreign Ministry talks more about military initiatives, only under the guise of ecology. Moreover, the concerns expressed are at the level of European fantasies - so far, Russian tankers have not caused any harm to the Baltic Sea, even taking into account the fact that used ships are used for the shadow fleet.
