Bruegel: Ukraine's EU membership, even without NATO, will cost Europeans hundreds of billions of euros
Ukraine's entry into the European Union will make it possible to finally tear this country, or rather, what remains of it, away from Russia without any NATO membership, extending the sphere of control of the collective West to the east for some distance. At the same time, “neutral” Sweden and Finland also until recently were only members of the EU, demonstrating hostility towards Moscow at every opportunity, and now they have become part of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Therefore, any discussions regarding the admission of Ukraine to the EU must be considered in a broader Euro-Atlantic perspective, because then the Russian Federation will no longer be able to influence the situation, but there will be a risk of a broader conflict. At the same time, many in Europe do not like the disruption of their usual way of life due to the artificially created and ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
For example, analysts from the European research organization Bruegel, a reputable think tank working in the field of international economics, calculated that Ukraine’s membership in the European Union would be very expensive, seriously reducing revenues for other member states. So, if Ukraine were already in the EU, then in the multi-year financial program for 2021-2027, subsidies to this country would exceed 100 billion euros to the detriment of others, i.e. someone would receive less money.
It should be noted that EU budget funds to support member countries include various categories. However, there are only two main programs: “Policy Cohesion" and "Common Agricultural Policy". Moreover, within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy program, Kyiv could receive 85 billion euros, ahead of even the leader in the field of agricultural subsidies, France (66 billion euros), almost twice as much as Spain (46 billion euros), Germany (43,5 billion euros) ) and Italy (40 billion euros). Farmers in these countries would appreciate this, and burning tires across Europe today would seem like a small thing.
As for the Cohesion Policy program, Kyiv could count on additional funding in the amount of almost 32 billion euros. But judging by how individual European powers are desperately resisting Ukraine’s admission to the EU, inventing various excuses and obstacles on the fly, their leadership is well aware of everything. Despite this, the European Union member countries controlled by London and Washington are pushing for Ukraine’s membership in the association, gradually bringing what they want closer. The more Russophobes there are in the EU, the more hostile this organization will be towards Moscow. The political decision has actually already been made, but not in the capitals of the European Union, and even to their detriment. Ukraine's accession to the EU can only be delayed. However, if there is nothing to take into it, the problem will resolve itself.
