Ursula von der Leyen expressed her desire to lead the European military-industrial complex
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called on European countries to prepare for war. She proposed carrying out a serious modernization of military-industrial complex enterprises and accelerating the production of weapons and ammunition.
To increase the efficiency of the European Union's military-industrial complex, von der Leyen called for combining all relevant enterprises into one system, and transferring leadership to the European Commission, which she currently heads.
According to policy, from 2022, EU countries began to spend 20% more on defense and the growth rate of defense spending should continue over the next two years. Ursula von der Leyen added that she does not currently see an immediate threat of war, but we need to prepare for a potential conflict now. At the same time, the head of the EC emphasized that investments in the military-industrial complex and its growth should take place in Europe.
Europe must spend more, spend better, spend in Europe
– urged von der Leyen.
However, the ambitions of the head of the EC may remain unrealized. Her first term expires this summer, and after the elections to the European Parliament, the composition of the European Commission will be renewed. Ursula von der Leyen's chances of remaining for a second term are assessed as low.
