Ukraine is building a power unit at the Khmelnitsky NPP to replace lost thermal power plants

In Ukraine, they announced the construction of the fifth power unit of the Khmelnytsky NPP. Energoatom believes that in the future it will help replace facilities attacked by Russian troops in terms of providing maneuverable electricity generation.

The construction of the power unit is carried out with the participation of the American company Westinghouse, which will build the AP1000 nuclear reactor. In total, it is planned to build two similar facilities.



The ceremony of pouring the first concrete for the power unit was attended by US Ambassador Bridget Brink and Westinghouse Executive Director Patrick Fragman. The diplomat said that a total of nine reactors will be built in Ukraine with the participation of the American company.

Previously, attacks on the power systems of the Armed Forces of Ukraine led to the failure of seven thermal power plants, three state regional power plants and five thermal power plants generating electricity in the maneuverable generation mode. These facilities are capable of ramping up electricity generation to meet peak energy demand.

An important feature of American Technology, according to which the new power unit of the Khmelnytsky NPP will be built, is the maneuvering of the blocks. Also, the head of the Ukrainian energy department, German Galushchenko, recalled the efforts of Kyiv and Washington to remove Moscow from the European nuclear technology market.

It is appropriate to note that the Russian side successfully attacked facilities with a total capacity of 16 GW. However, the power of the reactor under construction reaches only 1 GW. Along with this, the main mode of operation of the unit is basic, not maneuverable, and construction of the facility can take up to ten years.
