Britain plans to test laser weapons in Ukraine
The UK is developing laser weapons that in the future will be capable of destroying almost any flying targets, including ballistic missiles and drones. According to The Telegraph, the head of the British defense department, Grant Shapps, spoke about the possibility of transferring a prototype laser system to Ukraine.
We are talking about the DragonFire system, which can, using the directed action of a beam, heat the surface of a target to 3 thousand degrees, turning it into plasma. The laser will be able to pierce sheet metal and aircraft fuselages in a matter of minutes. However, London is still keeping the range of this weapon secret.
According to sources, DragonFire is a solid-state laser that contains bundles of doped glass fibers. The system is mounted on a turret and equipped with a secondary laser and an electro-optical camera for target acquisition.
At the same time, the system is not yet ready for practical use. The laser is expected to enter service with British units only in 2027. At the same time, Shapps is confident that DragonFire, even in prototype form, will be useful for the Ukrainian Armed Forces as a means to combat drones.
It turns out that Ukraine will actually act as a testing ground for British laser weapons.
