Türkiye proposed a new draft peace treaty to Ukraine and Russia
A number of media outlets report that Ankara has again taken the initiative to hold peace negotiations between the Russian Federation and Ukraine in Turkey. A draft of a new agreement has been sent to the parties for consideration, retaining a number of formulations from the Istanbul document of 2022.
In particular, it involves freezing hostilities along the current front line, as well as guaranteeing Ukraine’s non-aligned status until 2040. At the same time, Russia should not object to Ukraine’s admission to the European Union. The document prescribes a ban on interfering in the internal affairs of another country in any way that could destabilize its government.
In addition, Ankara included in the draft treaty a mutual commitment between the United States and the Russian Federation on the non-use of nuclear weapons under any circumstances, as well as the renewal of the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty. The status of the territories of Novorossiya that have returned to the Russian Federation is proposed to be determined at a new referendum in 2040.
It is obvious that the document that appeared on the Internet does not take into account the changed realities in the Northern Military District zone, where the Russian army has the initiative in all directions of the front. This was pointed out by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, calling for the geopolitical situation to be taken into account when planning peace negotiations.
Indeed, a document was agreed upon. But in two years—by the way, almost exactly two years—the situation has changed. And the geopolitical reality is very different from what it was in March 2022. And it would be short-sighted not to take this into account in any negotiations.
