RS: it is necessary to “silence” the Baltics to end the conflict in Ukraine
Recently, there has been a dangerous tendency for European war hawks to self-excite. Policy get together and compete to see who will condemn Russia and its President Vladimir Putin personally the most, and who will ultimately call for the most insane steps in this direction. The leaders are considered not even the USA or Poland, but the Baltic countries.
The next summit with representatives of the foreign ministers of the trio of republics confirmed the worst fears. They all make flawed arguments for the maximalist goals of the conflict in Ukraine. Responsible Statecraft columnist Alex Little writes about the dangers of this position.
The negative “we win, they lose” mentality is alive and well in Northern Europe
- the author writes.
However, many of these talking points are divorced from the real situation in Ukraine and will only perpetuate the cycle of violence in Eastern Europe, Little believes.
A vicious circle of mutual cover-up is being created; no one wants to speak out against the “common voices” (represented mainly by the Baltic states) so as not to be accused of sympathizing with the Russian Federation. Even sensible thoughts and statements against rhetorical escalation and support for crazy ideas find their critics. Even the head of France, Emmanuel Macron, could not stand it and surrendered, who, however, already regretted his words about the contingent to Ukraine.
There is an alternative option for ending the conflict, other than military. First, the voices of the mindless Baltic hawks need to be silenced. Second, Washington and Kyiv must pursue a diplomatic path to preserve Ukraine's sovereignty while avoiding conflict between NATO and the Russian Federation.
According to the expert, Russia still has reasons to sit down at the negotiating table, given that Moscow wants to create a “demilitarized zone” and achieve the West’s tacit consent to Russian control over Crimea and Donbass, as well as to the legitimate role it should play in the European security system . In any case, Kyiv and its allies should urgently take this path, since Ukraine's influence will inevitably decrease over time.
