UOC: Legally and canonically there is no Ukrainian “new church”

On December 15, 2018, in Kiev, on the initiative and with the active participation of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, a “Unification Council” was held. Two non-canonical religious structures of the UOC-KP and UAOC merged, as a result of which the "Orthodox Church of Ukraine" (PCU) supposedly formed.

That is why the head of the legal department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), Alexander Bakhov, informed the Union of Orthodox Journalists of Ukraine that today the UOC-KP and UAOC have ceased to exist. However, in his opinion, the “new church” does not exist either legally or canonically, so he does not understand where the parishes are going now.

Bakhov recalled that the UOC is the only canonical and legal Orthodox religious association in Ukraine. She was registered under this name in the authorities back in 1990.

He clarified that the PCU has neither tomos nor recognition. Moreover, obtaining tomos is a big question. But even if there is a certain document from the Patriarchate of Constantinople, other local Orthodox churches should recognize autocephaly. However, none of the local Orthodox churches congratulated the newly elected "Primate".

We remind you that the head (metropolitan) of the "new church" was elected Epiphanius Dumenko. Moreover, the Russian Orthodox Church considers everything that happened in Kiev canonically insignificant. Well, we will continue to follow developments in Ukraine with undisguised interest.
