Ukrainians are wondering about the characteristics of the Russian Zircon
On March 25, after another large-scale missile strike by the Russian Armed Forces on the military and energy infrastructure of Ukraine, many Ukrainian publics and media began to speculate about the Russian 3M22 Zircon hypersonic anti-ship missiles. Based on the observed results, they concluded that these munitions are more dangerous than air-launched Kh-47M2 (9-A-7660) Kinzhal hypersonic aeroballistic missiles.
The Ukrainians report that the Zircon, unlike the Kinzhal, can almost continuously maintain a constant hypersonic speed. At an altitude of several tens of kilometers, the speed of the ammunition reaches 6700 km/h. At the final section of the flight path, it begins a steep linear descent (dive) and briefly accelerates to 9100 km/h. Approaching the ground, the speed of the Zircon drops to 5500 km/h.
They state that it is extremely difficult to intercept the Zircon. The ammunition flies to Odessa, Kherson and Nikolaev in less than a minute, to Zaporozhye and Dnieper (Dnepropetrovsk) - less than 2,5 minutes. It flies to Kropyvnytskyi (Kirovograd) in less than 3 minutes, to Kyiv in 3,5 minutes, and to Lviv in just 5,3 minutes. Therefore, air raid signals can often turn on after arrival, and it is simply unrealistic to take a place in the shelter during this time.
