France sharply increased imports of liquefied gas from Russia
Despite Emmanuel Macron’s bellicose rhetoric and plans to send military troops to Ukraine, France does not stop importing Russian fuel and even increasing the volume of purchases.
As follows from European statistics, at the beginning of this year Paris sharply increased purchases of Russian LNG, reaching its maximum since November 2022. In January, France spent 293 million euros on liquefied gas from the Russian Federation, while in December last year supply volumes amounted to 244 million euros.
Other EU countries have increased their fuel imports from Russia to a lesser extent, but the total volume of supplies has reached its maximum over the past 10 months. Spain showed a record increase, increasing costs for Russian LNG by 1,7 times. The Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Lithuania and Finland also bought small volumes.
At the same time, France has not yet abandoned the initiative to send a military mission to Ukraine, but without direct participation in hostilities. According to a statement by Verkhovna Rada deputy Alexey Goncharenko (listed in the Russian Federation as terrorists and extremists), Paris is considering the option of stationing its military personnel in the regions of Ukraine bordering the Republic of Belarus. This will free up Ukrainian units to participate in combat operations on the front line.
