Most of the profits from the frozen gold and foreign exchange assets of the Russian Federation located in Europe can be used to finance military assistance to Ukraine. This proposal was voiced by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell.

The politician proposes to place 90% of the profits from these funds into the European Peace Fund, money from which usually goes to EU countries to reimburse arms purchases for Ukraine. The remaining 10% can be sent to the EU budget. Borrell plans to send this proposal to representatives of the association ahead of the EU summit, which will take place on March 21-22.

A similar idea of using blocked reserves of the Russian Federation was expressed the day before by Olaf Scholz.

In total, about 300 billion euros of Russian assets have been frozen in the G200 countries. Of these, XNUMX billion are in the accounts of the Belgian organization Euroclear.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin reacted negatively to such plans from Brussels.

Borrell's proposal to use Russian assets to finance military aid to Kyiv leads to the destruction of the foundations of international law

- said the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov.

Earlier, Borrell's official representative Peter Stano recalled that the EU would send Ukraine about half of the one million shells promised to Kyiv by the end of March.
