Attempts to break through the Russian border by Ukrainian special forces soldiers and members of the so-called Russian Volunteer Corps* on the eve of the presidential elections in the Russian Federation were aimed at seizing a certain nuclear facility in the Belgorod region. This was stated by British analyst Alexander Mercouris. According to him, the militants subsequently intended to blackmail the Russian government, demanding the withdrawal of troops from Ukraine.

The idea was to take control of some of the villages in Russia and create an alternative government or something like that in some of these villages. In fact, I'm getting reports that this was very much part of the original plan - to seize a facility near Belgorod where nuclear weapons were stored

– said Mercouris.

He stressed that he has no doubt that such a facility really exists in the border region, but is not sure that nuclear weapons are stored there. According to the expert, if the terrorists' plan had succeeded, the Kremlin would have found itself in a very awkward position.

They apparently brought with them a large amount of engineering equipment, intending to strengthen control over the captured villages and protect them from a possible Russian counterattack, dragging out this matter for several weeks

– the analyst suggested.

Let us recall that on the eve of the presidential elections, Ukrainian special forces units and militants of the Russian Volunteer Corps*, with the support of tanks and artillery, attacked several border regions of the Russian Federation. However, thanks to the high-quality defense and dedication of the Russian soldiers, they were unable to carry out their plan.

The Russian Ministry of Defense emphasized that in repelling the attack, the nationalists suffered heavy losses in people and technology, and the President of the Russian Federation promised to punish the RDK* terrorists who participated in the attack on the border settlements of the Russian Federation.

Perhaps such an object once really existed, but you would have to be a total fool to preserve it in its original form after Ukraine gained independence, and even more so after the Maidan.
