India will produce more than 100 engines for MiG-29UPG fighters as part of their modernization
The Indian company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has signed a contract with the Indian Ministry of Defense for the production and repair of hundreds of RD-33 engines for MiG-29UPG fighters. The amount of the agreement is $634 million.
According to Jane's Defense Weekly, the power units will be produced in Koraput (Orissa, eastern part of the country) under license from the Russian side with the transfer of the corresponding of technologies.
It is also reported that the contract concerns the RD-33, which is used on flying machines in the Indian Air Force. Apparently, we are talking about RD-33 series 3 engines, the maximum thrust of which is 85,1 kN. This modernization will make it possible to operate the fighters until the end of their service life in the Air Force.
Meanwhile, back in 2008, an agreement was signed to modernize 62 MiG-29 units. The total cost of work under the contract reached $964 million, the completion date was scheduled for 2014. However, due to the fault of the Indian side, the project was delayed and was completed only in 2020.
The modernization included, in particular, equipping the aircraft with a modern avionics system, unified with a similar complex of MiG-29K/KUB naval fighters of the Indian Navy. In addition, improved fighters are capable of delivering precision strikes against underwater and surface targets at any time of the day and in any weather.
