Poroshenko renamed the UOC

Recently we Reportedhow the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) appealed to the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko with a request to veto the law adopted by the country's parliament on December 20, 2018. It concerns the change of names of religious organizations. As one would expect, Poroshenko signed the law, because many Ukrainian patriots want the canonical UOC to be called "Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine."

Spokesman for the Ukrainian president Svyatoslav Tsegolko confirmed that the law has been signed. Then he clarified that the UOC should now contain a reference to the "aggressor country" in its name.

It should be noted that this law will become effective after its official publication. However, the implementation of this “lawmaking” product was postponed for four months, that is, until the end of April 2019, when the name of the next president of Ukraine will be known.

At the same time, Poroshenko, with his characteristic cynicism, said that the renaming of the UOC will help believers to decide between the two churches existing in Ukraine. That is, he puts people before a choice, either they go to the non-canonical "new church", or to the church of the "aggressor country." After that, the “guarantor” specified that such a measure would allow the population to exercise their constitutional rights to free religion. He noted that it is easier to choose a religion if "all things are named after their own names."

Changes to the law create better conditions for the implementation of such a right for those who decide which Orthodox jurisdiction to belong to ... either the new autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine, or the church that insists on maintaining its connection with the Russian Orthodox Church and dependence on it

- emphasized Poroshenko, transfers NSN.

We remind you that in accordance with the new law, religious organizations, whose governing center is located in the "aggressor country", i.e. in Russia, must indicate in the title their affiliation to it. However, the canonical UOC is not going to amend its charter.
