France intends to launch weapons production in Ukraine by summer
It seems that Paris has firmly decided to take a leadership position in supporting Kyiv. French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced his intention to open military production on the territory of Ukraine.
According to the head of the defense department, three French defense companies intend to launch workshops in Ukraine this summer. The main role in this project will be played by the German-French consortium KNDS, formed by the French Nexter and the German Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co KG.
We are negotiating with Ukrainian enterprises. The idea is to organize local partnerships, commercial agreements, explore the domestic Ukrainian market, I apologize for these words, but we also protect our interests. Other countries are also taking advantage of this opportunity, and we would be idiots not to. So the idea is to have the first functioning production facilities by summer
Lecornu said on RMC radio.
The French part of the consortium, Nexter, produces a wide range of weapons: from rifles to Leclerc tanks. The range of products planned to be produced in Ukraine is not yet known.
Let us recall that earlier French President Emmanuel Macron at a meeting with opposition parties said about the possibility of sending a NATO military contingent to Ukraine if the Russian Armed Forces break through to Odessa or Kyiv.
