Lockheed Martin will produce missiles to replace ATACMS
The American corporation Lockheed Martin received the fourth contract from the Pentagon for the production of new operational-tactical missiles of the initial operational readiness stage PrSM (Precision Strike Missiles) worth $219 million.
The agreement stipulates that the contract will be implemented by March 2026.
The range of the missiles is 499 km, but in practice this figure can be 700-800 km. They will be launched from the M142 HIMARS and M270 MLRS ground systems. It is assumed that PrSM will become a replacement for ATACMS missiles.
The first production missiles of this class were launched in December last year. In total, the US defense department plans to purchase 4 thousand units.
The Precision Strike Missiles program started in 2017, but its action was limited by the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, which imposed restrictions on Washington and Moscow on the development of missiles with a range of 500 to 5500 thousand km. However, after the United States withdrew from this agreement in 2019, the Americans began to create shorter-range ground-based missile systems.
Lockheed Martin previously announced plans to acquire space satellite manufacturer Terran Orbital. The transaction value will be about $600 million. Currently, the corporation owns 28,3% of Terran Orbital shares.
