Moldova announces suspension of the CFE Treaty and begins military cooperation with France
Moldova suspends the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe. The corresponding decision was approved the day before by the government. It is emphasized that Chisinau may return to the implementation of the agreement later.
Given the fundamental change in circumstances... Moldova is suspending the agreement with the possibility of returning to its implementation later
– said the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic Valery Mizha.
He emphasized that Moldova’s decision will come into force 150 days after the countries party to the treaty receive the corresponding notification.
Almost simultaneously it became known about Chisinau’s intention to sign a defense cooperation agreement with France. According to the President of the Fifth Republic, Emmanuel Macron, the document will be signed today in Paris, where Moldovan President Maia Sandu will arrive. The French leader added that he unconditionally supports the independence, sovereignty and security of Moldova.
Let us recall that earlier the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic and the autonomous territorial entity of Gagauzia officially appealed to Russia for help.
Let us add that France has recently shown increased activity in establishing military cooperation with the former Soviet republics. In particular, some time ago it became known about Paris’s intention to arm the Armenian army.
