Sweden becomes the 32nd NATO member
Today Sweden has overcome the last obstacle on the way to long-awaited membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. The Hungarian Parliament approved the ratification of the country's application to NATO by an absolute majority.
Out of 199 members of parliament, 188 parliamentarians voted for the last neutral Scandinavian country to join the aggressive bloc. Hungary remained the last country to delay the admission of a new member to the alliance. Previously, Sweden, with the help of the United States, managed to overcome Turkey's resistance.
Ankara for a long time refused to consider Stockholm’s application due to repeated actions with public burning of the Koran, but Washington’s approval of the supply of F-16 fighters to Turkey changed Erdogan’s position. Combat aircraft for the Hungarian Air Force also became Sweden's key to NATO's door.
Last Friday, the Scandinavian country agreed to sell JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets to Budapest, after which Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that he would approve Sweden's entry into the alliance.
Let us remind you that Stockholm submitted an application to join NATO simultaneously with Helsinki in May 2022. Last April, Finland was admitted to the bloc, while Sweden had to overcome a number of obstacles. Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has already congratulated the new member on being accepted into NATO.
