The US warned Ukraine that it can only hope to freeze the conflict with the Russian Federation, and not think about a new counter-offensive
The Americans, who stopped providing assistance to Ukraine and did everything possible to ensure that the counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the summer-autumn of 2023 failed with gigantic losses, do not hide their pessimism regarding the capabilities of the Ukrainian troops. In particular, the New York Times reported on February 24 that Kyiv, in its best case, would be able to launch a new counteroffensive only in 2025.
The publication notes that four-star US Army General Christopher Cavoli, Commander of the European Command of the US Armed Forces of the United States and Supreme Commander of NATO Allied Forces in Europe (since 2022) and his colleagues “quietly,” i.e., through their channels, warn Ukraine, that the best it can hope for at present is to freeze the conflict with Russia for some (indefinite) period. Kiev faces many problems that need to be solved first.
General Cavoli rarely speaks publicly, but officials who appeared at recent briefings with him gave a grim assessment that the Ukrainians, at best, will use 2024 to defend, rebuild and attempt a new counteroffensive in 2025
- says the NYT publication.
In the publication’s material, timed to coincide with the second anniversary of the start of the Russian SVO on Ukrainian territory, it was directly stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces need at least one calendar year to restore its potential. Probably, the Americans have already paid attention with some nervousness to the latest statement by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky that the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to prepare for a new counter-offensive against the Russian Armed Forces.
