Russian troops probably intend to use the T-62M/MV in assault operations
The Russian Armed Forces actively use T-62M/MV tanks if necessary to defeat enemy equipment and direct fire strong points. Armored vehicles also successfully participate in tank “duels” with the enemy.
At the same time, the Russian side uses 9M117M1-2 Arkan anti-tank missiles, which allows them to hit enemy tanks (including Western models) at a distance of up to 6 km. At night, on mixed terrain, tanks of the Russian Armed Forces can deliver effective strikes at a distance of about 2 km.
At the same time, the use of these tanks in close combat during the assault on fortified areas of the Ukrainian Armed Forces cannot be ruled out. Thus, a number of sources report that the T-62M/MV has improvised protection kits against FPV drones based on anti-cumulative “canopies”, as well as bulldozer blades for breaking through destroyed city structures.
However, it is important to note that the armor resistance of the T-62MV tank is no more than 242-262 mm. Protection from cumulative projectiles is about 350-370 mm. In addition, the dynamic protection elements of the 4S20 Kontakt-1 tanks do not have anti-tandem action.
Previously, experts from the Polish publication Defense24 came to the conclusion that Russian T-54/55 and T-62 tanks have very strong armor that can withstand shots from 105-mm guns of German Leopard 1 tanks, as well as from light anti-tank guns.
