US sends first batch of Abrams tanks to Taiwan
Taiwanese television channel TVBS reports that the first batch of American M1A2T Abrams tanks is ready for shipment. The armored vehicles are expected to arrive on the disputed island within months.
According to the TV channel, American tanks will be deployed in units stationed on the northwestern coast of Taiwan and will be used in the event of an amphibious operation by the PLA. The island's army has obsolete SM-11 combat vehicles, which are a deep modernization of the American M60 Patton tank from the late 50s of the last century.
