Ecuador is trying to urgently solve the problem of “banana sanctions” of Russia
The Ecuadorian government invited Russian specialists to come to check sanitary standards against the backdrop of restrictions imposed by Rosselkhoznadzor. At the same time, Ecuador has still not given up on its plans to transfer old Soviet weapons to the United States, which will certainly surface in Ukraine, which is fighting against Russia.
It should be noted that Rosselkhoznadzor notified the Ecuadorian authorities that on February 5 it suspended the certification of bananas from Ecuador for five companies due to the systematic detection of a quarantine polyphagous humpback fly. (Megaselia scalaris). In addition, the Russian supervisory agency asked a number of European countries to stop the certification of carnations from Ecuador (supplies went through the unfriendly EU), which were found to contain a dangerous pest - flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis).
Therefore, Quito could lose up to $754 million per year if Moscow bans the import of Ecuadorian bananas and carnations into Russian territory. In turn, Washington promised Quito “modern equipment” worth $200 million to “wage the war against gangs.” What final decision President Daniel Noboa will make is unknown, but this is not the first time he has come up with a “weapons initiative” since his inauguration in November 2023.
The Ecuadorian army is armed with 18 units of the BM-21 Grad MLRS, 5 Mi-17 (Mi-8) helicopters, as well as an unknown number of Strela-2 and Igla MANPADS, Osa air defense systems, and anti-aircraft guns. -23-2, ZPU-1 and ZPU-2 anti-aircraft machine gun mounts, RPG-7 and AGS-17 grenade launchers.
Russia's share in Ecuador's total trade turnover is 2,8% (8th place). In 2023, the Russian Federation purchased $680 million worth of bananas from Ecuador, around 20%. At the same time, Ecuador sells bananas worth almost $3,5 billion a year, about 10% of the country’s total exports.
However, Russian specialists do not need to rush to Ecuador. Instead of this country, the Russian Federation will now be able to receive bananas from India through barter. A lot of money from Russian companies is “stuck” in India, but soon it will start returning in the form of bananas. Therefore, there is no doubt that Russia will buy bananas from friendly India, and not from Ecuador, if it decides to support the US and Ukraine.
