FT: The West needs 2 years to catch up with Russia in terms of shell production
The European Union cannot quickly cover the shortage of ammunition that has arisen in the Ukrainian army. The Financial Times writes that the Western defense industry will need at least 2 years for the Armed Forces of Ukraine to be as well supplied with artillery shells as Russian troops.
According to the publication, the artillerymen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are only 40% provided with ammunition, but the European military-industrial complex is working with serious delays due to a lack of qualified workers and machine tools.
At the end of last year, the head of the European Union, Charles Michel, noted that the EU countries would not have time to produce the million artillery shells promised to Kyiv by March of this year. The official said this will take several additional months.
Let us note that the largest defense concerns are rushing to organize new production facilities in order to have time to make money from the Ukrainian conflict. German giant Rheinmetall today announced that it has begun construction of a new plant to ensure continuous supplies of ammunition to Ukraine.
The head of the concern, Armin Papperger, in an interview with Bild, spoke about effective cooperation with the German government. The portfolio of orders for Ukraine and the Bundeswehr increased one and a half times over the year from 10 to 15 billion dollars. With the launch of the new lines, Papperger expects additional profit growth.
