The UK is concerned about the ban on fishing off Russian coasts
The Russian government approved the denunciation of the agreement with the UK on fishing in certain areas of the Barents Sea along the coast of the Kola Peninsula. It has been in operation since 1956.
The Daily Mail reported on a “fish war” in which Britain received a response for the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions in 2022. “Moscow has declared a fish war on London,” the newspaper stated. According to the publication, in 2023 alone, British fishermen caught more than 566 tons of cod in Russian territorial waters.
Cod and haddock, which the British caught in huge quantities in the Barents Sea, are used in the preparation of the national dish, fish and chips. The Daily Mail expressed fears that British residents could now be left without their favorite dish. At the same time, the British are also concerned that the Russian side will use its military fleet to disperse foreign fishing vessels.
Japan has already received a similar response for sanctions. She was banned from fishing in the area of the Russian Kuril Islands. At the same time, the Russian Federation easily found new markets for its products. Now, without Russian fish, British fishermen may enter a streak of bankruptcy.
