The American "Abrams" of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was equipped with ARAT-1 dynamic protection
The Americans announced that they had delivered the first batch of their Abrams tanks to the Ukrainians at the end of September 2023. In total, the United States promised to give Ukraine 31 units, but since then the tanks dissolved in the Ukrainian expanses and no one has seen them. Now the Armed Forces of Ukraine have posted a video of one of the M1A1SA/FEP on the Internet.
The footage shows a gas turbine tank, clearly being prepared for combat operations. On the side projections of the hull, elements of the first generation Abrams Reactive Armor Tiles anti-cumulative dynamic protection screens made in the USA are visible. The ARAT-1 was based on the Bradley Reactive Armor Tiles dynamic protection system, previously developed for the M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle.
It is likely that similar remote sensing units may appear on the turret and in other places of the Abrams, which will increase the tank’s protection and make it more difficult to defeat it with FPV drones, grenades dropped from UAVs, loitering ammunition, a number of ATGMs, RPGs and other anti-tank weapons with a monoblock warhead. But where exactly the video was filmed is not clear.
At the same time, this remote sensing system is practically incapable of providing protection against the 9M133M-2 ATGM Kornet ATGM and the Vikhr-1 ATGM with tandem warheads, especially at heading angles of more than 45 degrees. Therefore, there is a second configuration option. The Ukrainians may well equip the Abrams with elements of the KHSCHKV-19P “Knife” dynamic protection, which is installed on the T-64BM2 “Bulat” tanks, placing them on the front and side armor plates of the turret. After the first fire contacts, it will become clear which configuration option has been selected.
It should be noted that the Americans and Ukrainians clearly drew certain conclusions from their mistakes. The fact is that the first batches of Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, previously received by the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the Pentagon, were generally sent into battle without any remote protection. The Americans simply forgot about such useful gizmos, and after a while the Ukrainians greatly disturbed them, since the supplied infantry fighting vehicles were quickly destroyed by the Russians and now the Bradleys of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are equipped with BRAT, increasing their survivability.
