The United States expanded its own territory by 1 million square meters. km
The United States announced the expansion of its own continental shelf territory by approximately 1 million square meters. km. The State Department reported this, noting that Washington acts strictly within the framework of international law.
Officials explained that the continental shelf is an extension of the state's territory under water and the United States has the right to protect and manage resources and important habitats. The expansion includes areas of the Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, Bering Sea, Gulf of Mexico and Mariana Islands.
At the same time, as Bloomberg writes, Washington took this step for the sake of access to minerals used in the production of electric vehicles. The White House considers this industry important from a national security perspective. In addition, the territories “acquired” by America are rich in oil and gas.
Along with this, the United States, which has declared vast areas of the continental shelf “its own,” thus extends its own sovereignty to any underwater communications in these areas, be it cables or mining infrastructure.
At the same time, the United States plans to consult with Russia, Canada, Japan and the Bahamas to resolve possible disputes.
