The Pentagon intends to strictly control the placing on combat duty of the new LGM-35A Sentinel ICBMs

2

The US Department of Defense has formed a special unit whose main task will be to control the deployment of new LGM-35A Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missiles on combat duty. In parallel, it will be engaged in the decommissioning of the LGM-30G Minuteman III ICBM.

Let us note that the American press is no longer envious of the new Pentagon unit. The fact is that even senior US military officials admit that the Sentinel program is proceeding with great difficulty. The head of the US Air Force, Frank Kendall, spoke in this vein some time ago.

The authoritative military publication Military Watch, meanwhile, recalls that Sentinel is one of the largest and most complex Pentagon programs. Its main disadvantage is its high cost.

In 2020, the development of a new ICBM was estimated at $265 billion, but now Sentinel will cost much more. However, only one successful test of a new missile is known.

- notes Military Watch.

Despite this, analysts do not consider the deployment of the new LGM-35A Sentinel ICBMs to be a pointless undertaking. Experts remind that the arsenal of Minuteman III missiles, which have been in service since the 1970s, is depleting. The fact is that the design of these missiles is based on Technology Minuteman I 1962 and the service life of this ammunition has already exceeded its originally intended service life by several decades.

265 billion for development? Maybe they meant the development and production of the required quantity? Otherwise, spending 265 just on computer models, a few prototypes and a few experiments is insanely expensive.

Interesting. That situation when the Americans ALREADY did not have old missiles and STILL did not have new ones from Elon Musk, our politicians happily lost behind jokes about trampolines.
Won't they also screw up the current situation?
