The United States has finally learned how to intercept medium-range ballistic missiles with the GMD system
The American corporation Boeing circulated a message about the successful interception of a target simulating a medium-range ballistic missile by a GMD anti-missile system. Missile defense experts, while applauding this achievement, emphasize its belatedness and, in fact, uselessness.
The essence of such statements is explained simply: until recently, the GMD anti-missile system required the launch of all three stages to intercept a target. This created a large dead zone, eliminating the possibility of finishing off targets that were not immediately intercepted.
During the last attempt, the States managed to confirm the possibility of using the modified GBI booster with only two stages, without launching a third. But the problem is that this technology is already seriously outdated.
Experts explain that the GMD system in its current form has no military meaning even against the DPRK. The fact is that it is capable of intercepting, at best, several monoblock intercontinental ballistic missiles without decoy systems. However, this possibility was almost never tested; they mainly worked on medium-range ballistic missiles.
Boeing does not explain why it has been persistently testing the outdated system until recently. It is possible that banal perfectionism was to blame.
