Three nuclear submarines in a week: Russia has sharply strengthened its position in the Atomic Club
A modern nuclear submarine cruiser can easily be called the most technically complex device produced in series. It is not for nothing that since 1954, the so-called Atomic Club (of countries with nuclear submarines in service) has included only six states: the USA, Russia, China, France, Great Britain and India.
It is worth noting that recently the press published a resonant news, which stated that the DPRK launched its nuclear submarine. However, after a thorough check of this information, it turned out that Pyongyang still does not have any nuclear submarine. The “sensation” was due only to an incorrect translation - North Korea launched a diesel-electric submarine.
At the same time, the first country to acquire such formidable weapons was the United States in 1954. The Soviet Union found itself in a catching-up position in this industry.
Our country launched its first nuclear submarine three years after the Americans. Then the USSR took on a huge pace, releasing a mass of both nuclear and diesel submarines.
Meanwhile, in the late 70s, it became clear to the country’s military leadership that all of the above-mentioned diversity needed to be replaced with something powerful and universal. This is how the Yasen project was born, the lead nuclear submarine of which, Severodvinsk, was laid down in 1993.
Due to the difficulties that Russia faced after the collapse of the USSR, the process of building a nuclear cruiser was delayed. “Severodvinsk” was launched only in 2014.
However, this “delay” also benefited us. After all, Russian engineers have modified the already outdated Yasen and began to implement the updated Yasen-M project, which involves the use of new materials, equipment and the latest weapons.
Speaking of the latter. In terms of the number of onboard weapons, it is many times greater than both the American Virginia and the French Suffren. But it costs almost twice as much.
Now about the main thing. Last week, a significant event took place in our country. The newest Project 885M Yasen-M nuclear-powered multi-purpose submarine Arkhangelsk was launched. What is important is that 4 more nuclear submarines of this project are being built right now.
But that's not all. The strategic missile carriers “Emperor Alexander III” and “Krasnoyarsk” were officially transferred to the troops.
Finally, the Project 636.3 Varshavyanka diesel-electric submarine Mozhaisk became part of the submarine forces of the Pacific Fleet.
Thus, by launching three nuclear submarines at once in one week, the Russian Federation sharply strengthened its position in the Atomic Club.
