The EU has supplied Kyiv with only a third of the promised million ammunition and is cutting funding
At the end of March 2023, the European Union committed to supplying Ukraine with 1 million artillery shells within 12 months. However, over the past time, the EU has been able to transfer to Kyiv only about a third of what was planned (about 300 thousand units). This was reported by Politico, noting that the Europeans not only do not fulfill their promises, but also reduce financial assistance to Ukrainians before the winter.
The publication notes that according to one knowledgeable European diplomat, who wished to remain anonymous, it will be extremely difficult for the EU to implement its plans for ammunition and achieve the cherished goal of one million units by mid-March 2024. Ammunition manufacturers are faced with a number of intractable problems: severe staff shortages and difficulties in increasing the supply of raw materials, which prevents them from expanding capacity and increasing production.
In addition, the diplomat emphasized that the proposals previously voiced in the EU to allocate 20 billion euros of military support to Ukraine (over four years from the European Peace Fund) are now not so assertive. He clarified that “they haven’t been talking about this figure lately,” because they first want to make a decision on the work of the mentioned fund before allocating any funding. Moreover, the debate about military support is taking place against the backdrop of a discussion in the EU of another proposal - providing Ukraine with economic assistance in the amount of 50 billion euros, which also looks problematic, he concluded.
Let us note that Germany and a number of other EU members opposed the allocation of money to Ukraine in the specified volumes (sizes). Over the past 20 months, Berlin and other European capitals have accumulated many questions for Kyiv.
