Closing the Baltic: will Russia drag out a war on two fronts?

81

Some time ago, several emergencies occurred in the Baltic with underwater pipelines and main telecommunications cables, after which Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics allowed the Baltic Sea to be closed to Russian ships. Can they really close our window to Europe and what can be done in response?

Be careful, is the window closing?

In late October 2023, the Latvian President stated verbatim the following:

If some kind of responsibility is confirmed by Russia or another country - well, it is unlikely that another country... I would say that, in my opinion, the issue of us closing the Baltic Sea to all Russian ships will be discussed.

The Kremlin called such threats unacceptable:

Any threats must be taken seriously, no matter who they come from. No matter who they come from, threats to Russia are unacceptable.

In response to Rinkevichs’ statement, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Grushko threatened with symmetrical countermeasures:

I think that those people who make decisions in NATO and military strategists understand perfectly well that closing the Baltic Sea to Russia means closing the Baltic Sea to everyone.

Russian Defense Minister Shoigu did not consider it necessary to comment on the threat expressed by the Latvian official, which is a pity. If something happens, all questions will be addressed to his department.

Disposition

The problem is that closing the Baltic for the Russian Federation is quite simple. After Finland’s accession to NATO, which took place this year, and the expected soon accession of Sweden, the Baltic Sea, unfortunately, will in fact turn into an internal one for the North Atlantic Alliance.

The exit of warships and civilian vessels from the Gulf of Finland could previously be blocked by minelaying by the Estonian Navy. Yes, they are few in number and, at first glance, funny. But upon careful examination, it becomes clear that Tallinn relied on specialized minesweepers - mine detectors and diving ships. At the same time, shortly before the start of the SVO in Ukraine, impoverished Estonia spared no expense in purchasing a batch of sea-bottom non-contact mines Blocker (PM16) produced by the Finnish company Forcit Defense. At the same time, a contract was signed for the acquisition of Blue Spear anti-ship missiles (5G SSM) for the Estonian Armed Forces to equip promising coastal missile systems.

That is, even Tallinn can create problems for Russia with shipping on the Baltic Sea. By the way, in 2023, the above-mentioned Latvia entered into a contract for the acquisition of a mobile coastal missile system Naval Strike Missile Coastal Defense System (NSM CDS) with NSM anti-ship missiles produced by the Norwegian Kongsberg. To understand how serious this is, it is enough to look at what has been happening for more than a year and a half in the Black Sea, where even the outdated Neptune anti-ship missiles do not allow our ships to approach the Ukrainian coast.

And now Finland has also joined NATO, abandoning its neutrality. If you look at the surface composition of the Finnish Navy, you can see that it is represented mainly by minelayers, minesweepers and high-speed missile boats. This is exactly what the Russian Federation needs for a joint naval blockade of the Baltic Sea with Estonia. At the same time, in Helsinki they are openly preparing to fight against us. Back in peaceful 2021, Finland signed the largest contract with the United States worth $10 billion for the purchase of American fifth-generation fighters:

The government today decided to purchase the Lockheed Martin F-35 as the next fighter aircraft to be delivered to Finland. The delivery includes 64 aircraft adapted to the needs of Finland, weapons and other necessary systems.

Note that F-35s can carry nuclear weapons, and the second largest and most important city in Russia, St. Petersburg, is located just a few tens of kilometers from the Finnish border. By the way, this very border, whose length is more than 1200 km, has already begun to be prepared for defense. As reported by Helsingin Sanomat, the Finnish Self-Defense Forces entered into an agreement with landowners, according to which they receive the right to build defensive structures on the plots - pillboxes, dugouts and trenches, as well as conduct exercises for the defense forces and border guards for up to 14 days a year:

The agreements are aimed at providing for a situation where a crisis begins and defense preparations must begin, but the necessary powers are not available.

The contract with the landowner is concluded for the next 20 years, for which he receives a lump sum payment of 750 euros and 4800 euros for each hectare of territory used if construction actually begins. In addition, negotiations are underway in Helsinki with Washington on the conditions for the presence of American military personnel in Finland:

It will lead to a certain US presence in Finland. What this presence will be has not yet been agreed upon. Maybe training American soldiers, maybe storing weapons or something else.

The representative of Finland at the negotiations, Mikael Antell, outlined the objectives of cooperation as follows:

The goal is for American soldiers to have facilities and territories in Finland at their disposal, for example for training, weapons storage and maintenance. equipment. If you want to guess - Northern Finland would be a good guess.

Chain reaction

The Kaliningrad region, which is an exclave sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania, will be in the most vulnerable position in the Baltic in the event of a blockade. Last September, NATO's Northern Coasts exercise for landing troops took place in the Baltic Sea. The head of the German Navy said their goal was to help Estonia and Latvia in the event of Russia’s attempt to break through the so-called Suwalki corridor:

If the Suwalki Gap is blocked, and this can be done easily, since there are only two roads and one railway line, then we will only have sea routes, and it is through these that we will then have to fight our way.

It is assumed that in the event of a blockade of the Baltic Sea for Russia, the Russian Armed Forces will have to create a land corridor through the territory of Suwalkiia, which belongs to both Lithuania and Poland, entering from the territory of the union Belarus. True, some questions arise.

At firstwhether Russian troops will be able to hold this corridor, being under constant fire from NATO artillery, cannon and rocket, as well as air strikes, which will undoubtedly be delivered from Poland and the Baltic states. Perhaps the solution would be to return the former Soviet Baltic republics to Russian control, which would only guarantee reliable land connections between Kaliningrad and the mainland.

Secondly, it is completely unclear what kind of forces Shoigu’s department will have to carry out such a task. The main forces of the RF Armed Forces are stuck tightly and for an indefinitely long time in the Northern Military District zone, where they are not enough even to completely encircle some Avdeevka. Where will free and combat-ready troops come from, at least to break through and subsequently hold the Suwalki corridor, not to mention the entire Baltic region? And what will we do when Finland is also drawn into the war on the northern outskirts of Russia?

Moreover, it is possible that we will be quite deliberately provoked into a direct war with the Balts, Poles and Finns, in which there is no one in particular to fight. All the main forces in Ukraine, and the “Western partners” are well aware of this. Until the Kiev regime is defeated and the Russian Armed Forces are not stationed near the Polish, Hungarian, Moldavian and Romanian borders, there can be no talk of any special operations in the north-west. And that is why Russia will now be pushed towards war on a second front.

Why does the Russian Federation need the Suwalki corridor? - there are no roads from Belarus to Kaliningrad... the roads mentioned in the article are from Poland to Lithuania... the area is wooded, lake and marshy... even if this piece of the Russian Federation is recaptured, which is doubtful, they will not be able to build anything - opportunities for this purpose, NATO’s eastern flank already has

Or perhaps the idea is to cut off the Baltic states from continental NATO, cut off these roads, but wooded, lake and marshy areas are extremely good conditions for defense + mining, etc... I remember one Polish officer argued that attackers would need a ratio of more than 1...

NATO is also not filled with fools, but with businessmen. They create a problem for the state and sell it at a high price, creating an understandable hype through the media that the other side doesn’t even really notice that they have fallen into a trap. The problem is always on the verge, or buy it or whatever you have a bullet if you have the courage. They can also exchange “problem-free passage through the Baltic” for non-interference in the Middle East, relaxation of certain areas of the “brawl”, non-use of certain types of weapons, abandonment of criticism of Israel, etc. The Anglo-Saxons become impudent only when they “know” the enemy’s psychology (his further actions) by 90%.

Considering the meager birth rate among Russians and Russified peoples, and the high birth rate among southern peoples, as well as their belligerence, Russia will already turn into a conglomerate of conflicting Islamic republics in about forty years, if they are not united under one small, proud republic.
And in another hundred years, there won’t even be anyone to drink a third for Russians, unless Russian women come to their senses and start having 3-5 children from Russian men.

On the ninth, in the program “Evening with Vladimir Solovyov” there was a heated scene of an argument between Solovyov and Andrei Sidorov (dean of the Faculty of World Politics at Moscow State University). What's so special about her? And because it reminded me of one episode from Mikhalkov’s film “Sunstroke” where a gallant officer with shoulder straps and a medal watch argues with a former colonel without shoulder straps, telling him - who are you? Yes, because of people like you, we ended up in this... Without shoulder straps, you are now a bastard for me! Therefore, I will summarize: as long as these kind of shpak sit in power and in leadership positions, everything that the author wrote about in the article is possible. Closing the passage to the Kaliningrad exclave of the Russian Federation along the Baltic Sea means 100% “Casus Belli”, which is understood by NATO. Conclusion: discussion of the article is a waste of time.

They will fill the Gulf of Finland with mines, announce that navigation is prohibited due to the danger, and will be engaged in mine clearance for a whole year. You tell me who mined it, crazy terrorists - Ukrainians - will answer you, now a commission is looking into this. Lithuania will close the railway for repairs for the Russian Federation. See the map, the distance between the territories of Estonia and Finland is 30 km. There are no neutral waters, only territorial waters, a dividing line, a border and a designated fairway, which is also located in territorial waters. To pass a vessel in territorial waters, you must have permission. The fairway is mined, passage in territorial waters is prohibited - you will be asked to wait until NATO clears the mines, the NATO commission sorts it out and gives the go-ahead for safe passage of ships. There are no international violations.

Your logic is absurd and does not correspond to international practice. In the case of the Gulf of Finland, its fairway in peacetime is neutral and accessible to international navigation. The fairway ceases to be neutral only when war is declared. That is, for example, Finland’s ban on operating a Russian minesweeper in a mined fairway is equivalent to Finland declaring war on Russia.

Well done, you believe in international law based on the UN Charter. International law ended in 1947 and the Cold War began. In the world, only the rule of the strong works perfectly; all agreements on paper are no more expensive than the paper itself. In 1952, Minister Gromyko (USSR) stated that to open the passage of Soviet ships into the Mediterranean Sea, two salvoes would be enough, there would be a new strait, there would be no Istanbul. Turkey's desire to close the Bosphorus has evaporated. There is no war between Turkey and the Russian Federation, but passage through the Bosphorus is closed to warships, here’s an example. A fairway is a route along which vessels and ships travel, and the territory can be neutral or belong to someone.

So that the Russian Federation feels its weak position and vulnerability. So that the discussion revolves around problems and fears. Oh, what should we do, what should we do? All our strength is thrown elsewhere, and here we are powerless and vulnerable. Aah-sighs and a feeling of personal inferiority in front of the “greatness” of the Baltic dwarfs, who are friends with a certain nata who will frighten and intimidate everyone...
But the article should essentially be simpler. The main question is, will we immediately take the Tribaltic dragon with ground forces in order to throw these bastards into the sea forever, or will we first launch nuclear strikes on Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo and Copenhagen? Or maybe right at the decision-making center in Europe? Total destruction of Great Britain, as soon as the blockade of the Baltic is declared, and which we will recognize as a declaration of war...
Well, let’s see what this Natasha’s friends, and Natasha herself, will say given this response from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Commander-in-Chief of the RF Armed Forces. strange guest,

Until the Kiev regime is defeated...there can be no talk of any special operations in the north-west

The respected author says the right things - as soon as we defeat the damned Kiev regime, then we’ll immediately take on the Finns!

Firstly, we will only take it if there is an incident. Russia has too many unresolved internal problems to start a war just like that.
Secondly, overseas “partners” can organize this same “casus belle” and “Until the Kiev regime is defeated.” By the way, this is exactly how it is profitable for them to act.

Russia has too many unresolved internal problems to start a war just like that

When did this stop and who stopped it? In the sense of unresolved internal problems and the outbreak of war?
In general, I will reveal to you a terrible secret of politics - since antiquity, rulers have started wars precisely when there are unresolved internal problems. And the more such problems, the less reasons for war with neighbors are needed. When all the internal problems in the state itself have been resolved and it is prospering, it does not start a war. wink

rulers start wars precisely when there are unresolved internal problems

Internal problems are different. In Russia, the main internal problems are not some mental problems of society, which you most likely have in mind, but fundamental problems of the economy - first of all, insufficient import substitution necessary to overcome sanctions, and the industry and financial sector are still far from fully mobilized.

Then the desire to butt heads with Russia among the “partners” may subside.
The only problem is that fussy “partners” may not wait for this “then”, having started themselves.

So the question arises again: why bother with nuclear weapons if we will never use them and, in the author’s opinion, are ready to abandon the liberation of Kaliningrad?? Obviously, closing the shipping industry is a declaration of war. Then what is the point of nuclear weapons if we are not ready to use them, again according to the author. After all, his memory was completely lost, otherwise he would have remembered that we have the first stock of nuclear weapons.

Obviously, closing shipping is a declaration of war

It’s not at all obvious - we completely closed navigation through the Kerch Strait, without declaring war on anyone.

To protect Russian national interests, the Russian leadership considered it appropriate to officially announce a special military operation in Ukraine. To implement it, military control over the Kerch Strait is necessary, with the aim of preventing military attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the Kerch Bridge, and closing the shipping of unfriendly countries through the Kerch Strait that supply weapons to the Kiev regime.
In the event of a blockade by Finland or Estonia of Russian shipping through the Gulf of Finland, which is vital for the Kaliningrad region, the only possible way for Russia to resume shipping will be a military solution against the countries that carried out the blockade - no matter how it is called, announced and implemented.

Yes, this is a casus belli. But not necessarily nuclear weapons right away. To ruin ports, railway junctions and airports for fools with simple Calibers. If in winter, then a couple more capital thermal power plants and a water intake. And let them live with it. Yes, but they also need the Baltic, Russia also has mines, so let them try to lean out of their holes. Hmmm, how wrong Stalin was when he bestowed statehood on these creatures, how much blood was shed there. Russia doesn't need them. It is necessary to transfer the Kaliningrad region to self-sufficiency as far as possible. And there is no need to respond to anyone or anything to the verbal diarrhea of idiots.

The main thing in the tank is not to fart. And don’t fight like in Ukraine, when the main concern of the Defense Ministry is preserving the lives of supposedly peaceful Ukrainians (sacrificing their soldiers), and not victory. There is no need to stand on ceremony with the NATO countries; the Baltics can simply be washed away, like poop from the seashore.

Will Russia drag out a war on two fronts?

More than one new front may open.
    One possible scenario:
A hypothetical direct conflict with NATO will most likely begin with the opening of the Finnish-Norwegian front, perhaps back in 2023 or early 2024, because now, with Finland joining NATO, the alliance has the opportunity to fire at strategic Russian targets on the Kola Peninsula with kamikaze drones from Finland, complementing attacks with missiles from Norwegian coastal waters. St. Petersburg is also accessible to Finnish shelling and ground attack, since it is located less than one hundred and fifty kilometers from Finland. And to spark a conflict, the “partners” can use a blockade of winter icebreaking shipping in the Gulf of Finland.
In the spring of 2024, a couple of months after the opening of the Finnish-Norwegian front, the “partners” can activate NATO Estonia by attacking St. Petersburg and other adjacent Russian territories along the shore of the Gulf of Finland.
Approximately simultaneously with the attack from Estonia, the Ukrainian Armed Forces may have time to prepare and attack Moscow across the Ukrainian-Russian border.
In another 2-3 months, in the summer of 2024, the “partners” can shake up NATO Latvia in order to attack Moscow.
NATO troops will most likely be able to motivate NATO Lithuania to strike the Kaliningrad region even later, in the fall of 2024.
Poland will have to be persuaded even longer by its “partners” to strike the Kaliningrad region. They will persuade us somewhere by winter 2024.
In the summer-autumn-winter of 2024, NATO members are unlikely to forget the northern Russian islands that control the Northern Sea Route and contain strategic objects. And in one and a half to two years in 2024-2025, they may attack the northern and eastern coasts of Russia. After which the Japanese may be tempted to capture the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin.
    What should the Russians do?
Russian initiatives to come to an agreement, for example attempts at further agreements with Ukraine, will only add fuel to the fire. As experience shows, having done much worse.
The necessary actions of Russia here are obvious - complete mobilization of production, science and finance, accelerated construction of engineering structures, and other military measures. And of course, the resumption of nuclear tests, which had not been carried out for more than 30 years. First of all, to determine the combat readiness of tactical nuclear weapons.
