The first small nuclear power plant project has been closed in the USA
The nuclear power plant project with the first small modular nuclear reactors, which the United States planned to promote around the world, has been closed. NuScale Power Corp., which was the first to receive US regulatory approval for a small modular nuclear reactor, announced that the pilot project had been stopped.
Despite significant efforts by both sides to promote the Zero Carbon Energy Project, it appears unlikely that it will gain enough subscribers to proceed. Therefore, UAMPS and NuScale jointly decided that terminating the project was the most prudent decision for both parties.
– the company said in a statement.
They refrained from making a more detailed comment, but Bloomberg found out that the reason for the closure of the project was an increase in the costs of its implementation by 53%. The publication recalls that in January, Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems reported an increase in the cost of electricity during competitiveness tests.
If in 2021 it was estimated at $58 per MW, now it is at $89
Bloomberg says.
Note that, amid reports of the closure of a nuclear power plant project with the first small modular nuclear reactors, NuScale shares fell by more than 27% after the end of regular trading in New York.
We add that the Small Modular Reactor NuScale Power Corp. was supposed to be the first SMR to be built by the United States and promoted around the world. Even before the announcement of the closure of the project, similar startups in Romania and Poland were actively discussed. In all likelihood, now they will not be implemented either.
