The United States is alarmed by the prospect of a Russian naval base in Libya

10

Washington is concerned about Moscow's growing influence in Africa. Russian-Libyan relations especially raise questions. The American agency Bloomberg reports this, giving details of what is happening.

The publication notes that Russia and the eastern part of Libya intend to conclude a defense agreement. Libya is actually divided into two warring halves and does not have a single government. The western part of the country is allied with Turkey, and a fragile truce in the almost decade-long civil war is in force for the third year.

At the same time, the Russian Federation wants to expand its military presence in the region and under the control of the 79-year-old commander-in-chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who visited Moscow on September 26 at the invitation of the Russian Ministry of Defense. This could lead to the fact that the Russian Federation will have a naval base on the Libyan coast, which will allow it to firmly gain a foothold near Southern Europe and pose a new challenge to Washington and its European partners.

The escalation of Russian activity in Libya poses a new challenge for the United States and its European allies, which are already at odds with the Kremlin over the conflict in Ukraine and the country's potential role in the broader Middle East crisis stemming from the war between Israel and Hamas.

- emphasized in the material.

According to former US special envoy to Libya Jonathan Winer, this threat is taken “very seriously” by the US administration.

Keeping Russia out of the Mediterranean has always been a key strategic goal

Winner said.

According to him, the White House understands that the prospect of creating a parking lot for Russian military vessels in one of the ports of Libya is in any case remote, since the sea harbors of the African country are in need of serious modernization. But Washington is alarmed in any case and will closely monitor developments, as it does not want to get another regional problem, the media summed up.

We remind you that during the Soviet era, ships of the Soviet navy could freely enter any port in Libya. Soviet military advisers and specialists were sent to Libya from 1970 to 1991 inclusive.

What kind of military vessels is Russia going to put there? Have they already been built? Russia’s presence in the existing, only foreign naval base in Syria is no more than nominal. The state, an ally of Russia, has not been liberated from the invaders; Russian air defense does not protect against external attacks in any way. And today, against the backdrop of the presence of two US AUGs nearby, the Russian forces in the region look ridiculously insignificant.

all these type C systems were not created for drones, I don’t think they are bad, they are good at shooting down missiles and planes in Ukraine on both sides, the Crimean bridge was not hit in the last attack...

Who's talking about drones? Regular launches of missiles from aircraft from Lebanese airspace at targets in Syria, such as Damascus, airports and anything at the discretion of the launchers, these are exactly the targets for the S300 and S400. Yes, even for Beeches and Shells. However, the Russian base is standing, and the missiles are flying.

It seemed that you were greatly generalizing - now it’s clear what you mean

An aircraft carrier is an iron box with a complete lack of seaworthiness. And the air link covering this box is not perfect.

A swing for a ruble - a blow for a penny? We have a fleet there that is directly ARMADA in the Mediterranean. It can’t fit right in Tarusa. One and a half boats in the flagship.....?

What is the US going to do? Bomb the Libyan infrastructure and water supply systems again?

Syria is a total disgrace. The Israelis have been bombing Damascus for several years now. It seems to me that it would be better for Russia not to be there, but it has to be.

We will transfer half of the ships from Tartus there.
