UN refused to denounce Hamas

Washington failed to push its vision of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the United Nations General Assembly. The draft resolution, which was introduced by the US Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, failed.

This draft contained a unilateral condemnation of the actions of the Palestinian Hamas group against Israel. Palestinians were urged to stop shelling Israeli territory (while the document did not contain any condemnation of the violent actions of the Jewish state itself).

During the meeting of the UN General Assembly, a dispute arose over the voting format. Washington expressed a desire for a resolution to be adopted by a simple majority. Other states insisted that a document could only be adopted if at least two-thirds of the countries members of the General Assembly voted for it. The last point of view was held by Russia.

For this resolution, 87 members of the General Assembly voted. 57 countries opposed, including the Russian Federation. Another 33 states abstained. Thus, the American project did not gain the required two-thirds of the votes.

Representatives of the Arab states, who opposed such a resolution, noted in their speeches that the culprit of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not Hamas at all, but Israel, which continues the occupation of Palestinian lands and the construction of Jewish settlements on them.

Nikki Haley was outraged that the project she submitted was not accepted. She accused the General Assembly of having never adopted a resolution in defense of Israel, but only condemned its actions.

The representative of Hamas Sami Abu Zuhri spoke about the failure of the resolution in his microblog on Twitter:

The failure of the American enterprise in the UN is a slap in the face of the US administration and a confirmation of the legitimacy of resistance

However, the Israeli Permanent Representative to the UN, Danny Danon, expressed satisfaction with the 87 members of the UN General Assembly supporting the above resolution. He warmly thanked Haley for the proposed project.
