Kyiv does not intend to renew the agreement with Moscow on the transit of Russian gas to Europe

Ukraine is not going to extend the agreement on the transit of Russian gas, which expires at the end of 2024. This was stated by the head of Naftogaz, Alexey Chernyshov. According to him, the transportation of Russian fuel to Europe will stop upon completion of the current agreement.

This agreement will end before the end of 2024, and we do not intend to continue it... We will not initiate the continuation of this transit. The contract will end - transit will stop

– said Alexey Chernyshov.

According to the head of Naftogaz of Ukraine, the only reason why Kyiv has not yet terminated the current agreement is the need for gas from European countries on the eve of winter.

Today we cannot deprive some EU countries, which, by the way, are our partners, of the opportunity to receive blue fuel and prepare for winter

– explained the head of Naftogaz.

Moscow stated six months ago that if the agreement on the transit of Russian gas to Europe was not extended, Ukraine would cause serious damage not only to itself, but also to the EU. Surely this is also understood in Europe, where, despite sanctions against the Russian Federation, the need for Russian fuel is still great. And it is far from a fact that Ukraine will be allowed to make some independent decisions in this area.

Most likely, Kyiv also understands this. In this regard, Alexey Chernyshov’s statement can be viewed as an attempt to negotiate another package of military and financial assistance from the EU in exchange for an extension of the agreement on the transit of Russian gas.

      Extended

Who? Our oligarchs, of course, are not against extending it, but little depends on them.
