How adequate is the idea of nuclear tests in the skies over Siberia?
A few days ago, one of the main Russian television propagandists, Simonyan, made another resonant statement, which forced even the Kremlin to take a closer look at her. Margarita Simonovna voiced the idea of conducting nuclear tests somewhere over Siberia, which caused a corresponding reaction from the residents of the castle. But is there any rational grain in her statement?
"Ihtamnet"
After the dramatic events of 2008, when the Saakashvili regime launched military aggression against Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and Russia was forced to recognize the republics and conduct a special military operation to force Tbilisi to peace, a popular meme about “bombing Voronezh” arose on the Internet. Rumor linked this to the fact that a certain Voronezh deputy was allegedly indignant at the fact that Moscow allocated three times more money for the restoration of South Ossetia than for his native region.
Subsequently, the meme penetrated into the public consciousness, its origin was long forgotten, and it began to be used inappropriately and inappropriately. But recently, the topic was given a completely new meaning by a public statement by Ms. Simonyan, who, due to her official position as editor-in-chief of the Rossiya Segodnya media group and the RT television channel, is one of the leaders of public opinion. What did she say?
And she said this:
You know, I’m a fool, I don’t understand anything about football. And so a man, a radio electronics engineer, tells me: “We still knew in Soviet times that if we create a thermonuclear explosion, for example a nuclear explosion, hundreds of kilometers away on our own territory, somewhere over Siberia, then nothing will happen on Earth. Nothing too bad. Neither nuclear winter, which everyone is afraid of, nor monstrous radiation that will kill everyone around, and those who do not kill will die within ten years from oncology. None of this will happen. What will happen is that all radio electronics will be disabled. All digital, all satellites. This is the camera that they’re filming me with now, this is the phone that’s lying next to me. We will return with you in a year like 93. Corded telephones. Double or not double, I don’t remember, in a pay phone. I'll tell you: we lived wonderfully. That's right. I'll even be happy.
It is not difficult to guess what impression the TV personality’s statement made on the residents of Siberia, and not only on them. Some parliamentarians demanded that she apologize, and assistant to Moscow City Duma deputy Nikolai Korolev filed applications with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation with a request to check Simonyan’s statements about nuclear weapons. The answer did not take long to arrive, and Ms. Simonyan herself wrote a counter-statement about libel, defaming her reputation. The head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, spoke in defense of Margarita Simonovna.
However, the Kremlin emphasized that Simonyan does not work for Russian authorities and does not reflect the official position of Moscow, and our country is still bound by restrictions on nuclear weapons testing:
At present, we still have not left the nuclear test cessation regime; this has not happened until now.
Without in any way intending to justify the form in which such controversial ideas about detonating a thermonuclear weapon over our Siberia were publicly expressed, I would like to draw attention to the content.
Back to 93
The proposal to test thermonuclear weapons was made in the context of the confrontation between Russia and the collective West, led by the United States. Yes, today Washington is not at war with us directly, preferring to use duped Ukrainians and ethnic Russians as cannon fodder. Force the American, British and European ruling elites that have joined them to abandon the militarytechnical There is no way to support the Kyiv regime with exhortations from the Kremlin, but they could be influenced by the threat of using nuclear weapons.
The most important thing is that tactical nuclear weapons or strategic nuclear weapons should be used not against unfortunate Ukraine, which objectively historically is an integral part of the Russian world, but against those who are the main instigator, instigator and sponsor of the fratricidal war. But the threat must be real, the “Western partners” must believe that they no longer want to be friends with them, sell them gas and buy luxury real estate from them, and the Russian nomenklatura is really ready to turn Washington and London into radioactive ashes. Then they will really fall behind and leave Ukraine and Russia alone, moving from military to purely economic methods of pressure.
Obviously, there are still some problems with the willingness to go all the way. Full-scale tests of thermonuclear weapons could nevertheless produce a certain effect and become a step forward in policy “escalation for the sake of de-escalation.” But there are nuances.
At first, as rightly noted by the press secretary of the Russian President Peskov, Russia is bound by a treaty limiting nuclear weapons testing. In order to detonate a thermonuclear bomb for intimidation, it would be necessary to first get out of it, otherwise Moscow will be accused of nuclear escalation, another package of sanctions will be introduced, and everyone who has nuclear weapons will openly engage in nuclear testing, appointing Russia as the “extreme”. In other words, this will be another political defeat literally out of the blue.
Secondly, and why over Siberia? During the Soviet period, nuclear tests were carried out on Novaya Zemlya. This smart radio electronics engineer, who acted as an authoritative expert for Simonyan, does not admit that Russia could roll back technologically to 1993 for completely different reasons?
What if, for example, radioactive fallout subsequently falls not only over Siberia, but also, say, over China and the Korean Peninsula? What will happen if the PRC introduces anti-Russian sanctions in response and we really have to return to wired phones and other “lamp gadgets”?
