The launch of a new aircraft on the market is associated with the passage of a number of mandatory, complicated procedures, which in almost all cases leads to certain delays.

The MS-21 aircraft was no exception. According to the newspaper Kommersant citing informed sources, the Federal Air Transport Agency transferred the certification of the new aircraft from May 2019 to July 2020.

Accordingly, the shift in the terms of certification of the Federal Air Transport Agency led to a shift in the certification of MS-21 at the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) by December 2021.

The postponement of certification dates was made on the initiative of Irkut Corporation JSC (part of the United Aircraft Corporation, UAC), which is the developer of the aircraft. Representatives of the corporation informed Rosaviation and EASA of their decision at a meeting of project managers.

As the corporation explained, the reason for the shift in the certification deadlines was the need for additional comprehensive tests of individual components and assemblies of the new aircraft.

The newspaper also reports that this is far from the only problem. Disputes between Rosaviatsia and EASA on the recognition of Russian certification continue.

If consensus is not found, then to obtain a European certificate, Irkut will have to pay for a test cycle at European airfields.
