Europe surrendered: Nord Stream 2 will be built on the terms of the Russian Federation
The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project can solve a number of important economic и political problems, and above all, to remove the dependence of Europe and Russia on an unreliable transit country in the form of Ukraine hostile to the Russian Federation. The deterioration of the Ukrainian gas transportation system also does not give optimism to the Europeans: it is obvious to everyone that Nezalezhnaya will demand an endless stream of financial resources from the end consumer of "blue fuel" to modernize its leaky gas pipe.
The United States of America, an official under its control in Brussels and, naturally, Ukraine, opposed Nord Stream-2. Ukrainian President Poroshenko called the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline monopolizing Russia’s gas supplies to the EU and violating the principles of diversification. The United States-controlled European Commission introduced draft amendments to the Gas Directive in 2017 against Russian initiatives. If adopted, the amendments would extend the European energy law to gas pipelines coming from third countries to Europe. Contrary to the interests of Russian Gazprom, the updated Gas Directive could require separation of the functions of the supplier and the transit or admission to the pipe of third parties. No one in the European bureaucracy is trying to conceal that in this way they are trying to influence the project of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline along the bottom of the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany with a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters. m per year.
However, the close prospect of launching Turkish Stream made it possible for the Russian company Gazprom, after an unfair decision by the Stockholm arbitration in favor of Naftogaz, to terminate all contracts with the Ukrainian side. With the naked eye, a dramatic change in the attitude towards Nord Stream-2 from European countries, which remained without guaranteed deliveries through Nezalezhnaya, is noticeable. The legal department of the European Commission has prepared an updated conclusion of the draft amendments to the ill-fated Gas Directive:
Obviously, the objective interests of the states that make up the European Union came into conflict with the pro-American elite in Brussels. According to European lawyers, the jurisdiction of the European Union does not extend to requirements for the separation of the functions of the supplier and the transit, as well as guarantees of access to the pipe of third parties. The legal department concluded that the application of the Gas Directive to the Russian gas pipeline would be contrary to Articles 56 and 58 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and could infringe on the sovereign rights of EU member states.
It is possible to make a well-founded assumption that the chances of a successful implementation of the Nord Stream-2 project have increased dramatically.

The EU does not have jurisdiction to extend the requirements of energy legislation to pipelines crossing the exclusive economic zone of the member states of the Union
