Long-range version of MS-21 may appear in Russia
After the introduction of Western sanctions, the Russian aviation industry got the opportunity to develop independently to meet the needs of domestic air carriers and the demand for aircraft in countries that do not cooperate with the West. The medium-haul narrow-body airliners MS-21 and Sukhoi Superjet New, the long-range wide-body Il-96-400M appeared, and the development of aircraft for regional and small aviation began.
At the same time, recently on the sidelines of SPIEF-2023, UAC General Director Yury Slyusar in an interview TASS said that the aforementioned MS-21 may have a long-haul narrow-body version. According to him, it will conditionally be something similar to the Airbus A321 XLR, which will be able to carry out non-stop flights on the Moscow-Vladivostok route. He clarified that the UAC is also studying the possibility of remotorizing the Il-96 - creating a twin-engine version and producing a shortened version of the modernized Tu-214 with an increased flight range.
It should be noted that the standard MS-21 has a maximum flight range of 5100 km, while the specified long-range MS-21-400LR for 250 seats will reach up to 12 km. The market really needs such an aircraft, because sending, for example, half-empty versions of the Il-000 for 96-300 seats over the same distances or a medium-haul narrow-body airliner with an intermediate landing costs much more. Therefore, it is likely that an improved Il-435M based on the MS-62 will appear.
