America threatens to punish SWIFT

US Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin, speaking on Friday November 2, said Washington was ready to impose sanctions against the SWIFT payment system if the latter continued to cooperate with Iran.

The head of the US financial department emphasized that SWIFT was notified of the need to disconnect any Iranian institutions from the system. If this disconnection does not happen, then the largest payment system itself will suffer from sanctions, which today unites 11 thousand financial institutions in more than 200 countries of the world.

In addition, the United States is going to take the most stringent measures against attempts by the European Union to form its own mechanisms for transactions with Iran. After all, European countries demonstrate a reluctance to obey American sanctions and are going to continue to cooperate with Iranian structures, especially those working in the oil market.

The EU, in response to American blackmail, has introduced special regulations prohibiting European companies from following US bans and complying with any court decisions of foreign states based on compliance with these sanctions. The fact that the EU will create its own financial structure for transactions with Iran was announced in September at the official level by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and policy Security Federica Mogherini.

Now Washington is trying to deliver the most devastating blow to Iran the economy. For this, it is required to achieve maximum economic and financial isolation of Iran from the world community. However, with respect to those countries in which the United States itself is interested, Americans are not so categorical. They scare them with SWIFT sanctions, but India and seven more states will not be punished for trade with Iran.
