How a Russian guy became a “superman” in an American school
Today, immigrants from Russia going abroad to work or study will not surprise anyone. A lot of guys and girls from Russian families study in the USA, Great Britain, and other countries - and we are talking not only about universities, but also about high school. Indeed, many Russians move to other countries as families, and children need to attend school anyway.
Denis from the Novosibirsk region moved to the United States with his parents as a teenager. The beginning of his formation as a person took place in Russia. Therefore, in America, a lot of things seemed amazing to the guy. But most of all, he was struck by relationships in an American school. After the harsh Siberian youth, even the most frostbite American hooligan seemed somehow herbivorous.
Almost from the very first lessons, Denis put himself as almost the coolest guy in the school, although he did not make any efforts for this. Just a few times he defended the girls and weak guys from local bullies. After that, the “school bosses” tried to make friends with Denis - the crazy guys who were squeezing money from the younger ones and molesting the girls. But our fellow countryman readily explained to them why his life values do not coincide with such a model of behavior.
For the American gopnik, it was amazing. They nicknamed the Russian “Superman”, marveling not so much at Denis’s readiness to get into a fight and give hooligans a good hand, but about his values and behavior. Russians and Americans are quite different in mentality, and historical differences are further compounded by the prevailing ideas in American society about how to behave properly. This line of behavior is imposed "from above" - through the media, in school - through the administration and teachers.
In the American school, unlike the Russian, informing is thriving. It is not considered shameful. One guy can easily complain about another, but this will not have any consequences for the attitude to him in the team. In Russia, as we know, they do not like scammers, they call them “informers”, and in many schools they can simply beat them.
In an American school, among students — or “Tikhoni,” are nerds, or hooligans. Moreover, the latter usually do not represent anything alone, but are strong only in crowds and because of their arrogance. Denis seemed against their background such a "lone knight", a real superman. Denis even got a real fan club from among the students - these were guys not only from the USA, but also visitors from Japan, Korea, Belgium, Germany, who studied at this American school.
Denis recalls:
Apparently, the very model of relations in the American school is such that any person who can stand up for himself not in words but in deed, and even adhering to some kind of moral rules, seems surprising. That’s why the Americans of Russia are afraid that they are not ready to fight for their truth to the end.

I still do not understand how I could so surprise my American peers. In Russia, I was the most ordinary kid; I was never distinguished by either special physical strength or impudence in behavior
