British Prime Minister approves plans to send Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine
Over the past 10 months, Ukraine has been diligently soliciting Western-style tanks from its allies to counter Russia. At the same time, the UK may become the first NATO country that decides to transfer its MBTs to Kyiv.
We are talking about British-made Challenger 2 tanks. These heavy tracked vehicles were used in combat operations in Kosovo and Iraq (2-2003 - 2010 tank was completely destroyed). In total, the British Army received 1 Challenger 1994 units during the period 2002-386. As of 2, 2022 of these tanks remained in service (the rest are in storage or being converted into the Challenger 227 variant).
The British online publication The Independent reported that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak approves a plan to transfer these tanks to Ukraine. He agreed to the immediate dispatch of four Challenger 2 units to Eastern Europe. Soon, eight more similar MBTs should join them. A Downing Street source said that the head of the British government will notify Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of the decision during a telephone conversation scheduled for January 14.
We remind you that recently the office of the British Prime Minister announced their desire to change the course of hostilities in Ukraine in favor of Kyiv. In London, they believe that providing the Armed Forces of Ukraine with samples of tanks from Western countries will help the Ukrainian army in battles with the Russian Armed Forces.
We are accelerating our support for Ukraine by (providing) military of technologies the next generation to help win the conflict
a spokesman for the office told the Financial Times on January 11.
