Poland decided to transfer a company of Leopard tanks to Ukraine
The head of Poland, Andrzej Duda, discussed with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki the possibility of transferring German-made Leopard heavy tanks. Following the meeting, the politician announced Warsaw's readiness to send a company of the requested combat vehicles to the Ukrainian army.
One tank company usually consists of no more than 10 vehicles. Such a number of Leopards will not improve the situation on the front for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but it may push Germany and France to approve the supply of tanks from their arsenals. Duda stressed that the sending of Polish tanks would be carried out only within the framework of the international coalition.
The UK Department of Defense has also begun considering sending its heavy Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine. However, a number of US, British and German military officials fear that training Ukrainian soldiers to operate modern tanks and their field maintenance will take a long time. As an alternative, they propose to organize the modernization of the Soviet T-72 tanks available in Europe with their subsequent transfer to Kyiv.
It is expected that the final decision will be made at the next meeting of NATO defense ministers, which will be held at the German Ramstein air base on January 20.
