Two Tu-160M strategic missile carriers handed over for flight tests
PJSC Tupolev, part of the United Aircraft Corporation, has handed over two Tu-160M strategic missile carriers for flight tests. One of the bombers was mass-produced as part of the reproduction of these aircraft, the other was significantly modernized.
The purpose of flight tests is to test the operation of control systems, on-board equipment and engines of missile carriers. Upon successful completion of the tests, the Tu-160M will be transferred for regular operation.
Rostec General Director Sergey Chemezov noted the priority of work on the modernization of the Tu-160M, since this aircraft is an important component of the Russian nuclear triad. The modernization of aircraft in service and the resumption of production of missile carriers is an important task for the state corporation.
The updated strategic bombers surpass their predecessors in terms of armament and equipment. So, the planes were equipped with new on-board radio-electronic systems, NK-32-02 engines and other equipment. Rostec plans to increase the production of Tu-160M in the near future.
The previously improved model of the Tu-160M bomber made its first flight over Kazan. The pilots performed certain maneuvers in order to test the stability and controllability of the missile carrier. Along with this, in the coming year, the Russian Air Force will receive updated Tu-22M3M long-range bombers.
