May begin construction of Nord Stream 3

According to Anatoly Yanovsky, Deputy Minister of Energy, the construction of Nord Stream 3 is quite possible. This will happen if demand for natural gas increases in European countries.

The probability of this is quite high. Definitely, a reduction in demand for Russian gas is not expected, but the expected growth rate in quantitative terms is difficult to predict, since this indicator depends on many factors.

In addition to gasification and the growing demand for gas by industrial enterprises, there is an increase in the need for electrification of transport and an increase in the share of electricity production from renewable sources. In this case, European countries will inevitably need additional volumes of gas to generate electric energy from it.

With an increase in the consumption of Russian gas by the countries of the European Union, it will be economically more expedient not to use the Ukrainian gas transportation system, but to build a new gas pipeline, the Nord Stream-3 pipeline. And this decision has nothing to do with policies. Here the role of simple economic calculation, because the pipeline through the Baltic is about 2 thousand kilometers shorter than the branch through Ukraine. Delivery costs when using the new gas pipeline are much lower, even taking into account the costs of construction and operation of the pipeline.

All this means that after the launch of Nord Stream 2, the laying of Nord Stream 3 may begin.
