The heavy ekranoplan returns: tests are underway in Russia

Even a cursory glance at the map of Russia is enough to understand that you can’t build up this entire territory with autobahns. But even if you set such a goal, then it will be extremely difficult to maintain the infrastructure in good condition for decades. The example of the United States proves this clearly, but they are much more compact than Russia.


Therefore, it is not surprising that in October 2018 at the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) named after Zhukovsky began testing the model of the ekranolet - a heavy transport aircraft integrated circuit (TTS-IS). This promising aircraft has an unconventional layout, it has combined wings and fuselage. According to the developers, this will allow the maximum use of the internal space, and at the same time increase the aerodynamic characteristics.



Initially, the developers tested the model in "off-screen" modes. This is when the ekranolet is at a great height away from the surface, which creates the presence of the screen. So they try to establish the effectiveness of the controls and the impact on the main structural elements (nacelles, nose, wingtips). This is a lengthy process. But this is how the improvement of the appearance of the device is achieved.

And only after that, taking into account the experience gained, they will begin testing with a screen effect. This is an imitation of the earth's surface, ice or water. After all, they create this effect. After that, the stage of experiments to visualize the flow around the surface of the model will begin. And at each stage, the developers will "finish" the appearance of the model, bringing it to the optimal state.

The TTS-IS project is really needed for Russia. Its successful completion will allow the creation of an ekranolet, which will be able to deliver 500 tons of cargo to a distance of more than 500 km at a speed of 6000 km / h. These ekranoletami will use the existing runways and the existing infrastructure. Consequently, they can be exploited not only in Russia, but also beyond its borders, since there will be no need to create something new specifically for them.

    I do not see a transport ekranoplane with an integrated hull at all - this external shape, in my opinion, is not entirely aerodynamic and even eclectic (take at least a straight front edge of the hull and swept-wing wings), too evidence of the inertia of thinking of the developers, obviously (even by the absence of aerodynamic "washers" on the wing tips winked ) that there are more "airplanes" than "ekranoplaners" smile .

    But, with a thoughtful and creative approach (in no way ignoring the developments of the specialized design bureau of the talented Soviet ship-screen-builder Rostislav Evgenievich Alekseev), it was possible to reduce the "experiences of fast-flowing life" even in the process of draft design, less costly "on paper "and not" in the metal "and approach the process of blowing tests with a more harmonious (in design and aerodynamic terms) and realistic layout, and not with a" training ", hastily cobbled together (I hope that not intentionally, for a long" PROCESS and refinement-improvement "with concomitant cost overruns -" cutting the allocated budget "?!) from disharmonious" pieces ", as it were," from a pine forest "- is it really so neglected and formalized in the" aeronautical "industry and has not remained at all among aircraft designers those who came to this profession by vocation and have an "aerodynamic flair" that allows you to create "beautiful flying airplanes" ?! winked smile
    IMHO. "whatnot" tail "plumage", its entire "box" is a formulaic, but NOT the best solution in this case and, in my opinion, a dead-end path, which should have been eliminated even at the stage of preliminary design, but for some reason came out as much stage of "purging" - probably, "effective managers" - project curators provided an opportunity for young designers (so that, God forbid, not to extinguish their youthful fervent enthusiasm, otherwise they will be disappointed and leave the profession - "who then to work with" ?! wink ) on the "materialized" experimental model, make sure of your mistakes and "evolutionarily", gradually, in small steps, "finishing (this is also written in the Article)" go "the entire long way" of designing a breakthrough mega-screen, from the first awkward "concept" to final (completely unlike the original Yes ) "working product", "regardless of any costs", stupidly handicraft smile (after all, the "long way to the goal" itself is important for the "sawflies", and not the "goal" and methods of its rapid achievement with minimal costs winked ???)?! smile
