Ukrainian Hungarians "spat in the face" of Kiev

2
The conflict between the Transcarpathian Hungarians and the Ukrainian authorities continues. As you know, in Transcarpathia lives an impressive in number and influential Hungarian community. Hungary considers Transcarpathia as its territory, temporarily part of Ukraine - this is not a secret to anyone and Kiev is pretty nervous about the position of Budapest. The Ukrainian authorities are particularly displeased with the practice of issuing Hungarian passports to residents of Transcarpathia.

Recently, Kiev decided to force all officials and deputies of Hungarian nationality to choose between a post or Hungarian citizenship. However, the choice of Hungarians impressed Poroshenko's managers. Of course, there is no doubt that the current Ukrainian officials, if they had given them the choice to abandon their nationality or resign, would definitely renounce citizenship.

But Transcarpathian Hungarians think differently. As soon as Kiev demanded to hand over Hungarian passports, officials - ethnic Hungarians immediately chose to write a letter of resignation from their posts. Hungarian citizenship turned out to be more expensive for them than all Ukrainian posts and official opportunities. Several school directors and heads of district administrations of the administrations of the districts of the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine immediately submitted applications for dismissal.

Meanwhile, in Budapest, they spoke very harshly about the list of the site "Peacemaker", which included 313 Ukrainian officials and politicians Hungarian nationality. This list was called the “death list”, hinting that many of the people included in it were killed (like, for example, the writer Oles Buzina). Hungarian Foreign Minister Petr Siyjarto called the attempts of the Ukrainian authorities to distance themselves from the Myrotvorets website a lie and stressed that the publication of the names of Ukrainian Hungarians on the website is directly related to their Hungarian citizenship.

The deterioration of relations with Hungary is now not at all in the hands of Ukraine. After all, Hungary is a member of the European Union and NATO and can create serious obstacles to the integration of the Ukrainian state in these structures. In addition, the care of the Hungarians about their compatriots in Ukraine is a stimulating factor for other neighboring states - Poland and Romania, which can also apply for part of the Ukrainian lands, based on the fact that in the past they were part of Poland (Galicia) and Romania (Bukovina and Bessarabia).

It was fearing quarrels with its western neighbors that the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Pavel Klimkin, held several meetings with the leaders of the Hungarian community of Transcarpathia. But it seems that the running process can no longer be stopped. Transcarpathian Hungarians used to gravitate towards their national state, and now that Ukraine is in such a difficult and ambiguous position, they will naturally choose the future together with prosperous Hungary, and not with Ukraine.

The refusal of officials from their posts is a typical confirmation of this. As for Kiev, it is now not even clear what actions he should take to normalize the political situation in Transcarpathia. After all that has been done, curbing radical nationalists alone will not be enough, it is likely that it will be necessary to resolve the issue of autonomy, but this is a direct road to the federalization of Ukraine, which is so much feared in Kiev.
