The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs sharply criticized the extension in Ukraine of the law "On the special procedure for local self-government in certain regions of Donetsk and Lugansk regions" for another year.

In a comment by the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Information and Press Department, published on the official website of the department, it was said that the purpose of this step is, first, to help preserve anti-Russian sanctions, and secondly, to try to prepare the way for a UN “peacekeeping” operation in Donbass.

The Foreign Ministry noted the "enthusiastic reaction" of Western countries, including the "partners" in the Minsk accords, to the decision adopted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. In fact, Russian diplomats believe that such activity by the Ukrainian authorities pursues goals that are very far from the implementation of the Minsk agreements. Moreover, the essence of this law in Kiev is not even hidden.

In Ukraine, they frankly declared that they needed the extension of the “status law” in order to guarantee “maintain sanction pressure on Russia” and create certain conditions for the deployment of the UN international peacekeeping operation in Donbass

- indicated the Russian Foreign Ministry.

It is also noted that the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Irina Gerashchenko (representing Kiev in the humanitarian subgroup of the Minsk Contact Group) openly said that the law on the status of Donbass is purely “technical”. This document has no chance of being implemented in practice.
