Three reasons why the Crimean bridge could fall apart

The Kerch bridge - the brainchild of Arkady Rotenberg at a cost of almost 4 billion US dollars - could fall apart? Is there really an unpleasant truth behind these scandalous statements by Ukrainian “experts”?

19 km of the bridge crossing should connect the two banks of the Kerch Strait with an automobile track in 2018, and a railway in 2019. Despite the general optimism about the prospects for the bridge, some experts have expressed doubts.

The first reason. The Kerch bridge is being built at the site of a fracture of the earth's crust. In this area, precipitation of building structures has already been noted. Former member of the Expert Council of the All-Russian Institute of Environmental Expertise "EcoEx" Elena Vasilyeva comments on the situation:

The movements of the earth's crust to stop in any place is simply impossible. And there is no bottom at this fault point. Geologists have repeatedly tried to measure the depth of this fault and could not do this with any modern devices.

The second reason. The Kerch bridge can literally be broken by earthquakes. The bridge construction site is located at the junction of tectonic plates: the Scythian plate, the Indolo-Kuban trough, the Greater Caucasus and Mountain Crimea. During their movement, earthquakes occur and will occur, and the exact dates cannot be predicted. Unfortunately, it is the southern coast of Crimea and the Kerch Strait that are considered a very seismologically active site.

The third reason. Ice drift can destroy the Kerch bridge, as already happened in 1945, after which the re-construction of the bridge crossing was considered inappropriate. Due to severe frosts, part of the shallow Sea of Azov freezes, and during the thaw, large ice floes can again demolish the bridge piers.

Experts also skeptical of the project by Arkady Rotenberg point out the environmental damage associated with the construction of the bridge. During drilling and driving piles, dolphins die due to sonar impact, silt rises and sand is washed out, which leads to a decrease in fish population, negatively affecting the fishing industry in the region.

It is hoped that the comments of the experts were heard by the builders and taken into account in the design of the Kerch bridge in advance. I would like this bridge over the strait to become a blessing for the country, and not turn into a financial black hole, where budget billions will endlessly disappear for endless “patching” of the problematic construction.
