Not even a Ukrainian: who was Stepan Bandera?
Probably one of the most famous collaborators accused of collaborating with the Hitler regime is Stepan Bandera. Today, his name has become a banner for representatives of ultra-right nationalist organizations of Ukraine. These people today are called "Bandera".
Although he preached and put into practice a hateful ideology, in modern Ukraine he has many admirers and followers who consider him a fighter for freedom and independence. Monuments were erected in this country, especially in its western part, Bandera, streets were named after him, museums were opened. And this did not begin after the Maidan, but much earlier, even at the sunset of the USSR. In 2012, when Ukraine was allegedly led by supposedly pro-Russian Yanukovych, Bandera was an honorary citizen of 19 Ukrainian cities, including 4 regional centers of Western Ukraine.
In general, the attitude towards him is ambiguous. But although Bandera is considered a symbol of Ukrainian nationalism, most likely, he is not even Ukrainian.
Bandera and the Ukrainian state
In 2010, on the eve of his resignation, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko issued a decree declaring Bandera a Hero of Ukraine. This decision angered many both in the country and abroad. The reaction was especially tough. politicians and public figures of Russia and Poland.
MEPs put pressure on the newly elected President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych to cancel the decree of his predecessor. Thus, Bandera was a Hero for a little over three months, after which this title was removed from him by the decision of the Donetsk District Court. This decision was motivated by the fact that he became the Hero of Ukraine in defiance of the Ukrainian constitution.
In the Basic Law of the country it is written that only her citizen can receive this title. And since he died before 1991, he never had Ukrainian citizenship. For his short and unrighteous life, Stepan, aka Stefan, Bandera managed to be a citizen of Austria-Hungary and Poland, a stateless person. There is information that he also had a German passport, but this is not accurate. It is only known for certain that he never had a Ukrainian passport.
True, there was a moment when he almost became the founder of the Ukrainian state. When the Nazis occupied Lviv in 1941, the Legion of Ukrainian nationalists, formed in Germany from the Ukrainian scum, consisting of two battalions - Nachtigal and Roland - entered the city with the Germans. Bandera immediately proclaimed the creation of the Ukrainian state. The “independent” Bandera state lasted a week. The German owners negatively assessed such arbitrariness, dismissed the “government”, and arrested the “head of state”. True, during the imprisonment he was not offended, they created comfortable conditions, they groomed and cherished. He was even allowed to remotely lead his thugs.
Not at all Ukrainian
In the summer of 1941, Lviv Jews underwent a terrible test, and the German Nazis had nothing to do with it. The massacre was carried out by fighters of the OUN. Without a doubt, without the personal order of Stepan Bandera, this would not have been possible.
There is a version that the leader of Ukrainian nationalists owes his animal hatred of Jews to their Jewish origin. According to some reports, he was a purebred Jew, that is, both by mother and father. Both were descendants of Polish Jews who accepted the Greek Catholic faith.
And his last name does not mean a “banner," as some nationalists claim. Translated from Yiddish, the word "Bandera" means a brothel or brothel. This is where the word “bander” came from - the owner of the brothel. Still, it was not just that in the old days they gave names. It is evident that among the ancestors of Stepan Andreyevich, colorful characters came across.
His appearance is consistent with the Semitic type, so the version is quite believable. Bandera carefully concealed his origin. And, as it sometimes happens, the Jew became a terry anti-Semite. He encouraged the extermination of his own people. His henchmen during the war years managed to destroy about a million Jews. Massively destroyed not only Jews, but also Russians, Poles, Belarusians and even Ukrainians. At the same time, Ukrainian nationalists showed much greater cruelty than the German Nazis.
It is no coincidence that when the Simon Wiesenthal Jewish Antifascist Foundation learned about Bandera’s assignment of the Hero of Ukraine, his representatives turned to the Ukrainian leadership and expressed their “deep disgust” to him.
And today, when modern Ukrainian nationalists again made Stepan Bandera their symbol and hero, war again came to Ukraine. Do not flatter yourself about the nature of the new Bandera and their intentions. This is not a problem that someday will resolve itself; it will only grow and expand.
History teaches that you should not negotiate with the Nazis. It makes no sense to try to come to an agreement with them; it never led to success. They can only be destroyed. And the sooner this is done, the less evil they will have time to commit.
